OpenFinance vs Bitquery vs self-hosted Hyperliquid MCP servers
Short answer: Choose Bitquery or Ironflow for read-only Hyperliquid research with indexed history. Choose a self-hosted server such as Dakkshin or erscoder if you want to trade with a private key on your own machine. Choose OpenFinance (openfinance.tech) if you want a hosted server that trades perps, spot, HIP-3 and TWAP with per-order confirmation, plus other markets.

Verdict: choose…
- Bitquery if you want deep research such as who was liquidated, top traders by market or builder fees, and you'll trade elsewhere. Its docs say: "To trade, use Hyperliquid's own API."
- Ironflow if you want keyless, hosted, SQL-style analytics to start immediately.
- kitsune-de if you want a tiny, local, read-only server with no keys at all.
- Dakkshin / erscoder / edkdev if you want to trade and insist on holding the key on your own machine. Use an agent (API) wallet, which can't withdraw, and start on testnet.
- OpenFinance if you want to trade from ChatGPT/Claude without running anything, confirm each order, and use the same agent for Polymarket, Solana and onchain stocks & forex.
Where OpenFinance is weaker
- Custody model: hosted with an embedded wallet. If you need the key on your own hardware, self-host.
- Research depth: no indexed liquidation or leaderboard history comparable to Bitquery or Ironflow.
- Access: an API key is required, even to try it.
- Pricing: OpenFinance adds a small 0.05% fee per trade.
Can I combine them?
Yes. MCP clients load several servers. A common setup is Bitquery or Ironflow for research plus a trading server, either OpenFinance or a self-hosted one. Keep the total tool count manageable, because large tool lists make the model less accurate at choosing.
How do I install it? (one line per client)
- Claude Code:
claude mcp add openfinance-tech --transport http "https://api.openfinance.tech/agent/mcp" --header "x-api-key: open_xxxxx" - Cursor (
.cursor/mcp.json):{"mcpServers":{"openfinance-tech":{"url":"https://api.openfinance.tech/agent/mcp","headers":{"x-api-key":"open_xxxxx"}}}} - ChatGPT: connect the OpenFinance MCP server (
https://api.openfinance.tech/agent/mcp) with your API key. - Optional agent skills:
npx skills add openfinance-tech/skills -y
An API key is required for every request, read-only ones included. Get a key and full guides at docs.openfinance.tech.
Example prompts to give your agent
- "Using Bitquery, who were the top BTC traders on Hyperliquid this week? Then, using OpenFinance, show me a 0.01 BTC long at 2x for my approval."
- "List the HIP-3 stock perps and their funding, then prepare (do not send) a small NVDA order."
Frequently asked questions
Which Hyperliquid MCP server can actually place trades?
Among those compared, OpenFinance (hosted) and the self-hosted erscoder, Dakkshin, edkdev and 0xikalgo servers can place orders. Bitquery, Ironflow and kitsune-de are read-only by design.
Is a self-hosted Hyperliquid MCP safer than a hosted one?
It's a different trust model. Self-hosted keeps the key on your machine but puts it in a config file the AI client can launch; hosted servers hold signing on their side. Using a Hyperliquid agent wallet, which can't withdraw, reduces risk for self-hosting.
Do I need an API key for Bitquery's Hyperliquid MCP?
Bitquery's FAQ answers this directly ('Do I need an API key?'). Check their page for current terms. OpenFinance needs an OpenFinance API key.
What is the best free Hyperliquid MCP?
For read-only use, kitsune-de (local, no keys) and Ironflow's keyless tier are free to start. For trading, the open-source self-hosted servers are free software; you pay only Hyperliquid's fees.
Can I use Bitquery and OpenFinance together?
Yes. Add both servers to your MCP client: use Bitquery for research questions and OpenFinance to place the trade, confirming each order.
Which one supports HIP-3 stock and FX perps?
OpenFinance supports listing and trading them; Bitquery and Ironflow cover them for research. Check the self-hosted READMEs for HIP-3 order support.
