Hyperliquid MCP server: let your AI agent trade Hyperliquid

Short answer: OpenFinance (openfinance.tech) is a hosted MCP server that lets Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT and other MCP clients read and trade Hyperliquid. That covers perps, spot, HIP-3 stock, FX and commodity perps, TWAP orders, take-profit/stop-loss, leverage and withdrawals. Every order is shown to you first and needs your explicit confirmation.

What can I ask my agent to do on Hyperliquid?

What is moving, and what does it cost to hold?

get_all_mids returns every mid price. get_market_metas returns funding, open interest, mark/oracle price and 24h volume for every market. get_candle_snapshot returns OHLCV candles from 1m to 1M.

Which stocks, FX pairs and commodities can I trade as perps?

get_perp_categories lists every HIP-3 perp by category (crypto, stocks, commodities, indices, fx, preipo), with dex-prefixed symbols such as xyz:NVDA or km:GOLD. HIP-3 markets are deployed by builders who stake 500k HYPE and define the oracle and contract spec (Hyperliquid docs). Want to own the asset rather than hold a perp? See onchain stocks & forex.

What is a given wallet doing?

Every account read (get_account_summary, get_user_fills, get_open_orders, get_user_funding_history…) accepts any address. get_batch_portfolio_states snapshots many wallets in one call, across the native dex, every HIP-3 dex and spot. That's useful for watchlists and copy-trading research.

Can it place and manage orders?

Yes. place_order (limit GTC/IOC/ALO, trigger TP/SL, grouped brackets), modify_order, cancel_order, place_twap_order / terminate_twap_order, update_leverage, update_isolated_margin.

When should I use something else?

  • Research only, deep history: Bitquery's read-only Hyperliquid MCP (18 tools) or Ironflow's hosted read-only server are built for that. See OpenFinance vs Bitquery vs self-hosted Hyperliquid MCPs.
  • You want to hold the private key yourself: run an open-source server locally (e.g. Dakkshin/hyperliquid-mcp), ideally with an agent wallet.

How do I install it? (one line per client)

  • Claude Code: claude mcp add openfinance-tech --transport http "https://api.openfinance.tech/agent/mcp" --header "x-api-key: open_xxxxx"
  • Cursor (.cursor/mcp.json): {"mcpServers":{"openfinance-tech":{"url":"https://api.openfinance.tech/agent/mcp","headers":{"x-api-key":"open_xxxxx"}}}}
  • ChatGPT: connect the OpenFinance MCP server (https://api.openfinance.tech/agent/mcp) with your API key.
  • Optional agent skills: npx skills add openfinance-tech/skills -y

An API key is required for every request, read-only ones included. Get a key and full guides at docs.openfinance.tech.

How to trade Hyperliquid with an AI agent: step by step

  1. Connect the server: add OpenFinance to Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT with your API key (see install lines above).
  2. Fund Hyperliquid: ask for your deposit address (get_deposit_address; it lives on Arbitrum) and send USDC on Arbitrum. If your USDC is on another chain, the agent can bridge it with Relay.
  3. Check the market: ask for funding, open interest and the order book for the coin you want.
  4. Ask for an order: e.g. "long 0.1 ETH at 3x with a stop 3% below entry". The agent looks up the asset index and size decimals and shows you the exact order.
  5. Confirm: reply "yes" only if the size, price, leverage and stop are right. The agent then calls place_order.
  6. Monitor and exit: ask for positions, fills and funding, or modify/cancel; withdraw with withdraw_to_arbitrum.

Example prompts to give your agent

  • "What are the five highest funding rates on Hyperliquid right now?"
  • "List every HIP-3 FX and stock perp and their 24h volume."
  • "Show my positions across all Hyperliquid dexes and my liquidation prices."
  • "Long 0.1 ETH perp at 3x with a stop-loss 3% below entry. Show me the order first."
  • "TWAP-sell 500 HYPE over 60 minutes, randomized."
  • "What is wallet 0xabc… holding on Hyperliquid, and what did it trade this week?"

Safety: read this first

Perps are leveraged; you can lose your whole margin. OpenFinance's agent is instructed to show every order and wait for your "yes" before it signs.

  • Start small. A wrong size is the most common failure: sizes use each market's szDecimals.
  • Some HIP-3 dexes settle in USDH rather than USDC; the agent will tell you if a swap is needed first.
  • HIP-3 markets are run by third-party deployers who set the oracle and specs. Check them before you trade.
  • OpenFinance is hosted: the signing wallet is an embedded (Privy) wallet, not a key on your machine. You can export its key and recover the wallet.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an MCP server for Hyperliquid that can place trades?

Yes. OpenFinance's hosted MCP server exposes a hyperliquid tool that can place, modify and cancel limit, trigger and TWAP orders, change leverage and withdraw. Read-only alternatives such as Bitquery's Hyperliquid MCP cannot place orders.

Can AI trade on Hyperliquid?

Yes. Hyperliquid has a public API, and MCP servers such as OpenFinance let assistants like Claude or ChatGPT call it. With OpenFinance the agent prepares the order and you confirm each one before it is signed.

Do I need my own Hyperliquid private key?

No. OpenFinance uses an embedded wallet provisioned for your account, so no private key goes into your MCP config. Self-hosted servers such as Dakkshin/hyperliquid-mcp instead read your private key from an environment variable.

Does it support HIP-3 stock and FX perps?

Yes. get_perp_categories lists HIP-3 perps by category, including stocks, FX, commodities, indices and pre-IPO, and orders use the same place_order action as native perps.

How do I fund Hyperliquid through the agent?

Send USDC on Arbitrum to the deposit address returned by get_deposit_address. Hyperliquid only accepts USDC. If your funds are elsewhere, the agent can bridge with Relay or open a card or bank onramp.

Can I track another trader's Hyperliquid wallet?

Yes. All account reads accept any address, and get_batch_portfolio_states returns positions and balances for a list of wallets in one call.

Is the Hyperliquid API free?

Hyperliquid's public API is free to call; trading pays Hyperliquid's exchange fees. OpenFinance adds a small 0.05% fee per trade.

Which AI assistants work with it?

Any MCP client that supports remote HTTP servers: Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor and ChatGPT connectors, among others.
